Barbershop Talks

Barbershop Talks is a leadership series that helps male identified students from underrepresented backgrounds to connect and share experiences. Seeking to mirror the realism experienced in a traditional barbershop it provides a place for conversation and dialogue about the challenges and resources available to males of color.

Citizen U

Citizen U is a 10-week program that is run out of the Center for Leadership & Civic Engagement in the Department of Intercultural Affairs. It is designed to educate students about how to be responsible, engaged citizens and to inspire them to be involved in their communities and our democracy. Started in 2018, the program has won a NASPA award for excellence in civic and democratic engagement.

Cupola Conversations

The Division of Student Affairs launched Cupola Conversations in 2016 and continues addressing important topics impacting students each semester through the concept of civil discourse.  The program aims to create informal opportunities for the university community to engage in constructive dialogue about various topics, some of which may be controversial and potentially provocative. Additionally, this initiative will serve to create an institutional culture that welcomes and nourishes difficult conversations throughout university life.

Dinner & Discourse

Dinner & Discourse is a civil dialogue series sponsored by the Pirates Vote team in the Center for Leadership & Civic Engagement. Media clips, headlines, podcasts, photographs, and political cartoons are used to drive the discussion.  A safe space is created for all individuals to share their unique experiences and personal perspectives around the topic.  The topic for each Dinner & Discourse will be released on Engage one week prior to the event.

 


NCivility Summit

Intercultural Affairs annually hosts the NCivility Summit aimed at promoting understanding and positive change on East Carolina University’s campus and beyond. The inaugural 2016 summit featured a keynote by Opal Tometi, executive director of the Black Alliance for Just Immigration and co-founder of the Black Lives Matter Movement. In addition to the keynote speech, the Civility Summit provides opportunities for student, faculty, staff, and community member attendees from the state and region to engage in conversations about civility and how it intersects with topics such as activism, race, politics, sexual orientation, gender, gender identity, and global affairs.

Building Trust and Practicing Civility: Constructive Dialogue During the Election Season

Description: This virtual professional development session will equip participants with the skills to facilitate meaningful conversations about contentious issues. Participants will learn out-of-the-box strategies to proactively create a culture of trust, techniques to support the development of students’ mindsets and skills for engaging across differences, and specific tactics to intervene in tense moments of conflict.

#ECUnited Civil Discourse Initiative – Information Session

Description:  Through partner programs, education, and resources, the #ECUnited initiative has been a driving force in deepening our understanding of civil discourse and freedom of expression that shape our local and global communities. This information session will provide an overview of this initiative and how to connect with it.

Civil Discourse and the Academy

Description:  Participants will discuss and review Freedom of Expression regulations, examples of positive and effective civil discourse, and ways to manage dialogue and free speech topics in the classroom.


Pledge Purple

Organized by the Women & Gender Office, Pledge Purple is a yearlong initiative focused on education and advocacy with the goal of ending sexual violence, harassment, and bullying.  The university provides one week of focused programming each fall, scheduled in November. Each year over 3,000 students, faculty, and staff take the Pledge stating, “I will not use my hands or words in acts of violence, bullying or sexual assault.  I will educate myself about what violence, bullying and sexual assault looks like in the Pirate community.  I will support my fellow Pirates and safely intervene as an active bystander if I witness scenarios of violence, bullying or sexual assault.”

What’s The Tea?

What’s the tea is a weekly series that encourages civil discourse on various hot topics within society. Participants are encouraged to share their different perspectives at the Ledonia Wright Cultural Center, a safe place for all Pirates.
