Citizen U

Citizen U is a 10-week program that is run out of the Center for Leadership & Civic Engagement in the Department of Intercultural Affairs. It is designed to educate students about how to be responsible, engaged citizens and to inspire them to be involved in their communities and our democracy. Started in 2018, the program has won a NASPA award for excellence in civic and democratic engagement.

Culture Fest

Culture Fest is an annual festival featuring culturally diverse musicians and activities. Designed to highlight the unique and diverse communities that exist within ECU community to demonstrate that we truly #ECUnited.


Cupola Conversations

The Division of Student Affairs launched Cupola Conversations in 2016 and continues addressing important topics impacting students each semester through the concept of civil discourse.  The program aims to create informal opportunities for the university community to engage in constructive dialogue about various topics, some of which may be controversial and potentially provocative. Additionally, this initiative will serve to create an institutional culture that welcomes and nourishes difficult conversations throughout university life.

Dinner & Discourse

Dinner & Discourse is a civil dialogue series sponsored by the Pirates Vote team in the Center for Leadership & Civic Engagement. Media clips, headlines, podcasts, photographs, and political cartoons are used to drive the discussion.  A safe space is created for all individuals to share their unique experiences and personal perspectives around the topic.  The topic for each Dinner & Discourse will be released on Engage one week prior to the event.


Diversity Dialogue Series

The Diversity Dialogue Series (DDS) is a monthly event that centers around issues of difference, diversity, identity and social justice. The dialogue series connects students through informal conversations regarding pressing issues of identity and experience on campus and within the context of the United States.


Get CulturED

Get CulturED is a series aimed at providing education surrounding various cultural identities. Each event will focus and explore a different culture, allowing participants to immerse themselves in the culture and leave with a better understanding and appreciation of the highlighted culture.

 

Indigenous People’s Day

The purpose of Indigenous Peoples’ Day, a holiday that celebrates and honors the Native Americans and commemorates their shared history and culture. Indigenous People’s Day is a counter-celebration held on the same day as the U.S. federal holiday of Columbus Day, changing the narrative from celebrating the violent history of the colonization in the Western Hemisphere to honoring the first peoples of the United States.


Martin Luther King Jr Celebration

“Everybody can be great, because everybody can serve,” Martin Luther King Jr’s words which exemplify the ECU ideal in how we choose to honor this legendary activist. Annually the Ledonia Wright Cultural Center hosts a keynote speaker who speaks to the legacy of Dr. King and how we are community members can continue to embody his message moving forward to make our society a more equitable and just place for all.


NAACP Unity March

The March promotes the value of diversity across all spectrum’s and to show that our differences are what makes us stronger.  Additionally, this initiative will serve as an annual event that highlights our diversity at ECU and to promote peach.  The Unity March is being sponsored by multiple student organizations as well as the Division of Student Affairs.

NCivility Summit

Intercultural Affairs annually hosts the NCivility Summit aimed at promoting understanding and positive change on East Carolina University’s campus and beyond. The inaugural 2016 summit featured a keynote by Opal Tometi, executive director of the Black Alliance for Just Immigration and co-founder of the Black Lives Matter Movement. In addition to the keynote speech, the Civility Summit provides opportunities for student, faculty, staff, and community member attendees from the state and region to engage in conversations about civility and how it intersects with topics such as activism, race, politics, sexual orientation, gender, gender identity, and global affairs.
North Carolina Civility Summit

Netflix & Chat

ECU’s SAB and the Dean of Students Office partner to present the award winning program Netflix & Chat. The program is an educational initiative that takes Netflix’s shows (i.e. Stranger Things, Last Chance U, Hip Hop Culture, and others) and develops a conversation around them. In 2019, Netflix & Chat won the ECU Division of Student Affairs Program of the Year and was presented to a standing room only crowd at the NASPA National Conference in Los Angeles.

Pledge Purple

Organized by the Women & Gender Office, Pledge Purple is a yearlong initiative focused on education and advocacy with the goal of ending sexual violence, harassment, and bullying.  The university provides one week of focused programming each fall, scheduled in November. Each year over 3,000 students, faculty, and staff take the Pledge stating, “I will not use my hands or words in acts of violence, bullying or sexual assault.  I will educate myself about what violence, bullying and sexual assault looks like in the Pirate community.  I will support my fellow Pirates and safely intervene as an active bystander if I witness scenarios of violence, bullying or sexual assault.”

Responsible Behavior Initiative

The ECU Police Department, as part of its mission, provides education outside of the classroom. To further this mission, the police department has developed a Responsible Behavior Initiative (RBI).  This proactive initiative will promote positive interactions between the campus community and the police, by emphasizing responsibility to oneself, to others and to the core values of East Carolina University.  The overall goal of this initiative is to provide social education for what it means to be a responsible community member.

The Conversation

Led by the Division of Student Affairs in 2019 has developed a short video series that covers conversational topics around race, identity, politics, and other social issues. Each segment features a student or staff/faculty member at ECU who addresses an important community issue. Videos are no longer than 90 seconds and live on the ECU InnerPirate YouTube page. Return regularly and catch the next conversation.
